The pixel is code on your site that tells Meta what a visitor does after clicking an ad: viewing a product, adding to cart, or purchasing. The Conversions API (CAPI) sends the same events from your server, recovering what the pixel loses to browsers and blockers. Using both, with deduplication set up correctly, gives the platform more accurate data to optimize your ads.
Why it matters
Ads learn from events. If purchases aren’t recorded, the platform optimizes for the wrong people and shows you worse results than reality.
The core events
ViewContent: viewing a product or service.
AddToCart: adding to cart.
InitiateCheckout: starting checkout.
Purchase or Lead: a confirmed purchase or request.
Preventing duplicates
When an event is sent from both the pixel and the server, use the same event ID so Meta merges them and doesn’t count the purchase twice.
How to check
Use the Test Events tool in Events Manager.
Place a test order and confirm the purchase appears once with the right value.
Review event match quality in Events Manager.
